# Tablas de Madera for RV Interiors: The 2026 Wood Panel Selection Guide

**By BIGBAHN Editorial Team** · 2026-09-09

If you search "tablas de madera" in Spanish, most of what comes back is chopping boards and pizza paddles. The term the Spanish RV industry actually uses for engineered panels is **tableros** — _tablero contrachapado_ (plywood), _tablero aligerado_ (lightweight panel). Get this right before writing an RFQ: a supplier reading "tablas" may quote solid timber battens instead of sheet goods.

> The term the Spanish RV industry actually uses for engineered panels is **tableros** — _tablero contrachapado_ (plywood), _tablero aligerado_ (lightweight panel).

For motorhome interiors the question is numbers, not words. Poplar hybrid lightweight plywood runs at 400–430 kg/m³ against roughly 600–700 kg/m³ for conventional furniture plywood — about 40% less at equal thickness. A 1220 × 2440 mm sheet weighs 11 kg at 9 mm and 17 kg at 15 mm, with screw holding of 710–740 N and moisture content held at 6–14%.

## Tablas, Tableros and Contrachapado: Getting the Spanish Terminology Right

In Spanish, _tabla_ means a board in the everyday sense: a solid piece of sawn timber, a plank, a chopping board. Search "tablas de madera" on any Spanish marketplace and the results skew heavily toward _tablas de cortar_, _tablas pizzera_ and _tablas para picadas_ — kitchen and serving articles. That is a real search intent, and it is not the one an RV manufacturer has.

The industry word for engineered sheet goods is _tablero_. A _tablero contrachapado_ is plywood; _tablero aglomerado_ is particleboard; _tablero MDF_ and _tablero OSB_ keep their acronyms; _tablero aligerado_ or _tablero ligero_ is a lightweight panel; _tablero fenólico_ carries a phenolic resin face. When a Spanish converter says _tableros para camperizar_, they mean sheet panels for campervan conversion — exactly the product category that [lightweight plywood](https://www.bigbahn.de/collections/lightweight-plywood) occupies.

This matters commercially.

A Spanish buyer writing an RFQ for "tablas de madera" to an Asian or European supplier introduces ambiguity in three places: species (solid timber versus engineered core), format (batten versus full sheet), and tolerance (furniture-grade versus structural). Each ambiguity is a quotation round-trip, and each round-trip adds days to a production schedule. Writing _tablero contrachapado ligero, 1220 × 2440 mm, 15 mm, ENF_ removes all three in one line.

The practical advice for buyers working across both languages: keep "tablas de madera" as the search-facing phrase in your content and metadata, but switch to _tablero_ the moment you move into specifications, drawings and purchase orders. Search intent and procurement precision are different jobs, and each has its own vocabulary.

Buyers who need shaped parts rather than flat sheets should also specify the [CNC processing](https://www.bigbahn.de/pages/cnc-processing) route at the same time, since nesting and edge banding decisions change the usable yield per sheet.

## Five Hard Numbers for Specifying RV Wood Panels

Density is the first number, because it converts directly into payload. Poplar hybrid lightweight plywood sits at 400–430 kg/m³; conventional furniture plywood in poplar or birch typically lands between 600 and 700 kg/m³. On a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet the difference is concrete: 11 kg at 9 mm, 14 kg at 12 mm, 17 kg at 15 mm, 20 kg at 18 mm and 25 kg at 25 mm for the lightweight panel.

A motorhome with 30 m² of interior lining and cabinetry can shift the panel-weight line item by well over 100 kg purely through core selection — payload that returns as water, gear or a second battery.

Screw holding is the second, and it is where lightweight panels are most often attacked. The trade-off is real but manageable: BIGBAHN's 12 mm panel measures approximately 710 N and the 15 mm approximately 740 N.

That is adequate for cabinet boxes, wardrobe sides and bench seating, provided the design uses appropriate fasteners and inserts. Where a joint carries repeated removal or high pull-out — hinge plates on a heavy door, for instance — stepping up one thickness grade or adding a threaded insert costs a few hundred grams and removes the failure mode entirely.

Bending strength and stiffness come third and fourth. Measured values are 26.52 MPa bending strength at 12 mm and 54.6 MPa at 15 mm, with modulus of elasticity rising from 5,100 MPa (12 mm) to 6,560 MPa (15 mm).

The practical reading: stiffness climbs faster than thickness, so a 15 mm panel is not merely 25% stiffer than a 12 mm one — in bending it is roughly double. That non-linearity is why shelf spans and bed platforms jump in thickness rather than creeping.

Moisture content is the fifth and the most under-specified. BIGBAHN holds finished panels between 6% and 14%, with production control centred on 8–12%. This is not cosmetic: a panel bonded at 14% and installed in a vehicle that cycles between coastal humidity and dry inland heat will move, and movement shows up first at the laminate bond line as blistering.

Combined with PUR lamination and an eight-stage dust-removal process followed by 48-hour conditioning, tight moisture control is what keeps [laminate panels](https://www.bigbahn.de/collections/laminate-panels) flat after the vehicle has been through two summers.

## Thickness by Position: From 3 mm to 30 mm

Thickness selection in an RV is a position-by-position decision, not a single house spec. BIGBAHN's furniture guidance puts cabinet boxes at 15 mm, wardrobe side panels at 15 mm or 12 mm, overhead cabinets at 12 mm, and back panels, drawer bottoms and interior trim at 3 mm, 5 mm or 6 mm. Shaped panels are usually fixed at 15 mm or 18 mm. The pattern is straightforward: thickness follows the fastener and the span, not the appearance of solidity.

Wall and ceiling linings are the largest weight lever in the vehicle. Recommended thicknesses are 3 mm, 5 mm or 6 mm for wall panelling and 3 mm or 5 mm for ceilings, with decorative grille ceilings fixed at 12 mm. Replacing a legacy 9 mm lining with a 3 mm or 5 mm alternative cuts component weight by roughly 40% to 60% — and because linings cover the biggest surface area in the cabin, that single substitution moves the whole-vehicle number more than any furniture change.

Sleeping and seating carry the load cases. Standard bed platforms are specified at 18 mm with a sheet weight of 20 ± 1 kg; where the platform is skinned or covered, 12–15 mm is sufficient. Bench seating runs at 15 mm (17 ± 1 kg), seat cushion supports at 15 mm or 18 mm depending on load, and heavy-duty load-bearing bed platforms at 25 mm (25 ± 1 kg). Partitions and storage sit between: lightweight non-load-bearing partitions at 9 mm or 12 mm (approximately 11 kg per sheet), storage boxes at 15 mm, internal shelving at 12 mm — about 18% lighter than the 15 mm equivalent.

Two further groups round out the map. Specialised components: curved door panels at 15 mm for formability, premium dining tabletops at 25 mm (or [compact laminate](https://www.bigbahn.de/pages/compact-laminate) for scratch, impact and heat resistance), toilet partitions at 15 mm — where high humidity makes PET foam composite the better substrate — and drawer boxes at 12 mm or 15 mm with 3 mm or 5 mm bottoms. Functional shields: spare tyre covers at 9–15 mm, sun visor substrates in thin panels or PET foam, and trunk side trim in 3–6 mm lightweight poplar plywood.

## Core Comparison: Poplar Hybrid, Falcata, Marine Plywood and PET Foam

Core choice determines density, moisture behaviour and cost. Poplar hybrid lightweight plywood, BIGBAHN's volume grade, runs 400–430 kg/m³ across 2.7 to 30 mm. Premium European poplar trades a little density for surface quality and a lighter, more uniform colour — preferred where the panel will be clear-coated or printed. Falcata (also sold as albizia or "light hardwood") drops density further, useful for large linings where stiffness comes from the substrate build-up rather than the core itself.

Marine plywood is the answer for genuinely wet zones, and it is worth being precise about why: it is specified for bond-line durability under prolonged water exposure, not for structural superiority. It carries a WBP (weather and boil proof) bond and is the conventional pick for bathroom substrates, exterior lockers and any panel that may see standing water. It is heavier and more expensive than poplar hybrid, so using it across the whole vehicle wastes both money and payload.

PET foam board is the third path and the one that breaks the weight floor entirely. At 80–300 kg/m³ depending on grade, with 100% closed-cell structure, zero water absorption and thermoplastic recyclability, it suits wet bath enclosures, insulated roofs, heavy-duty subfloors and any position where weight dominates and fastener loads are modest. BIGBAHN's [PET foam board](https://www.bigbahn.de/pages/pet-foam-board) runs 9–30 mm in densities of 80, 100, 120, 150, 200 and 300 kg/m³. The honest caveat: screw holding is lower than plywood, so it is a substrate for specific positions, not a blanket substitute.

Surface build-up is the last decision and it interacts with all three. Poplar hybrid accepts PP, PET, PVC and HPL facings; [HPL high-pressure laminate](https://www.bigbahn.de/pages/high-pressure-laminate) is the durable choice for worktops, tables and high-wear verticals; [decorative films](https://www.bigbahn.de/collections/thermofoil-components) suit vacuum-formed door skins and wrapped profiles. Choice of facing changes both finished weight and the bonding process — PUR flat laminating and vacuum pressing do not behave identically, so the facing and the [PUR flat laminating](https://www.bigbahn.de/pages/pur-flat-laminating-line) decision should be made together, not sequentially.

## The Compliance Checklist: Formaldehyde, Fire and Traceability

Formaldehyde is the entry ticket. ENF and E0 are the two grades that matter for vehicle interiors, and BIGBAHN panels carry both — with a measured value of 0.022 mg/m³ published on the corporate site. Compare that with the regulatory ceiling: REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XVII, Entry 77 caps formaldehyde concentration at 0.062 mg/m³, applying to road-vehicle interior parts from 6 August 2027 and to furniture and wood articles from 6 August 2026. A panel measuring roughly a third of the limit has margin; a panel that merely "meets E1" may not.

Fire behaviour is the second gate and it is vehicle-class specific. Interior materials for M2 and M3 category vehicles — the classes that cover motorhomes — must satisfy UN ECE R118 limits on horizontal and vertical flame spread and on melting behaviour. BIGBAHN panels carry DIN 5510-2 S4 for rail-derived fire, smoke and toxicity assessment plus a B2 surface classification, and the plywood range is tested to Class 1 surface quality. EN 1646-1 sets the habitation health and safety requirements for caravans, and (EU) 2018/858 is the framework regulation under which whole-vehicle type approval is granted.

Traceability closes the loop and is increasingly a purchase-order line rather than a marketing claim. FSC chain-of-custody certification means the wood can be followed back through the supply chain; EUTR due diligence — BIGBAHN has passed BV EUTR due diligence — addresses the legality of the timber at origin. JAS F☆☆☆☆ adds an independent emission measurement at ≤ 0.3 mg/L, which is useful when selling into markets that recognise the Japanese standard alongside European ones. Ask for certificate numbers that map to a batch, not PDFs of a generic logo.

## From Inquiry to Volume: The B2B Procurement Flow

The purchasing sequence has five steps and skipping the second is the most common cause of rework. Step one is requirement definition: position, load case, thickness, density and facing. Step two is sample validation — physical coupons tested for screw holding, moisture behaviour and fire. Step three is a pilot run to verify batch consistency. Step four is volume ramp. Step five is a long-term agreement with scheduled releases. A buyer who goes straight to price after step one usually pays for it in step three.

Lead time and MOQ are the two commercial variables. BIGBAHN quotes 25–30 days for delivery, with factory-direct supply and OEM/ODM supported. Standard sheet formats are 2440 × 1220 mm and 2500 × 1220 mm, with tolerances of ±1.5 mm on length and width and ±0.3 mm on thickness — figures worth writing into the contract, because a tolerance argument discovered at goods-in costs more than the price difference ever did. Custom sizes, pre-bonded edge banding and CNC-nested parts all extend the schedule, so they belong in step one rather than step three.

Where does the Spanish market fit? Vehicle registrations published for February 2026 recorded 466 motorhomes (_autocaravanas_), 330 campervans (_cámperes_) and 116 caravans (_caravanas_) in Spain in a single month, alongside 89 urban vehicles — a market large enough to justify dedicated stock programmes and stable enough to plan around. For converters in that market, the practical route is a mixed spec: lightweight poplar hybrid for the bulk of cabinetry and linings, PET foam composite for wet zones and subfloors, and [grille panels](https://www.bigbahn.de/collections/grille-panel) for acoustic and decorative ceiling runs.
