Tablas, Tableros and Contrachapado: Getting the Spanish Terminology Right
In Spanish, tabla means a board in the everyday sense: a solid piece of sawn timber, a plank, a chopping board. Search "tablas de madera" on any Spanish marketplace and the results skew heavily toward tablas de cortar, tablas pizzera and tablas para picadas — kitchen and serving articles. That is a real search intent, and it is not the one an RV manufacturer has.
The industry word for engineered sheet goods is tablero. A tablero contrachapado is plywood; tablero aglomerado is particleboard; tablero MDF and tablero OSB keep their acronyms; tablero aligerado or tablero ligero is a lightweight panel; tablero fenólico carries a phenolic resin face. When a Spanish converter says tableros para camperizar, they mean sheet panels for campervan conversion — exactly the product category that lightweight plywood occupies.
This matters commercially.
A Spanish buyer writing an RFQ for "tablas de madera" to an Asian or European supplier introduces ambiguity in three places: species (solid timber versus engineered core), format (batten versus full sheet), and tolerance (furniture-grade versus structural). Each ambiguity is a quotation round-trip, and each round-trip adds days to a production schedule. Writing tablero contrachapado ligero, 1220 × 2440 mm, 15 mm, ENF removes all three in one line.

Five Hard Numbers for Specifying RV Wood Panels
Density is the first number, because it converts directly into payload. Poplar hybrid lightweight plywood sits at 400–430 kg/m³; conventional furniture plywood in poplar or birch typically lands between 600 and 700 kg/m³. On a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet the difference is concrete: 11 kg at 9 mm, 14 kg at 12 mm, 17 kg at 15 mm, 20 kg at 18 mm and 25 kg at 25 mm for the lightweight panel.
A motorhome with 30 m² of interior lining and cabinetry can shift the panel-weight line item by well over 100 kg purely through core selection — payload that returns as water, gear or a second battery.
Screw holding is the second, and it is where lightweight panels are most often attacked. The trade-off is real but manageable: BIGBAHN's 12 mm panel measures approximately 710 N and the 15 mm approximately 740 N.
That is adequate for cabinet boxes, wardrobe sides and bench seating, provided the design uses appropriate fasteners and inserts. The practical reading: stiffness climbs faster than thickness, so a 15 mm panel is not merely 25% stiffer than a 12 mm one — in bending it is roughly double. That non-linearity is why shelf spans and bed platforms jump in thickness rather than creeping.

Thickness by Position: From 3 mm to 30 mm
Thickness selection in an RV is a position-by-position decision, not a single house spec. Replacing a legacy 9 mm lining with a 3 mm or 5 mm alternative cuts component weight by roughly 40% to 60% — and because linings cover the biggest surface area in the cabin, that single substitution moves the whole-vehicle number more than any furniture change.
Sleeping and seating carry the load cases. Standard bed platforms are specified at 18 mm with a sheet weight of 20 ± 1 kg; where the platform is skinned or covered, 12–15 mm is sufficient. Bench seating runs at 15 mm (17 ± 1 kg), seat cushion supports at 15 mm or 18 mm depending on load, and heavy-duty load-bearing bed platforms at 25 mm (25 ± 1 kg). Partitions and storage sit between: lightweight non-load-bearing partitions at 9 mm or 12 mm (approximately 11 kg per sheet), storage boxes at 15 mm, internal shelving at 12 mm — about 18% lighter than the 15 mm equivalent.
Two further groups round out the map. Specialised components: curved door panels at 15 mm for formability, premium dining tabletops at 25 mm (or compact laminate for scratch, impact and heat resistance), toilet partitions at 15 mm — where high humidity makes PET foam composite the better substrate — and drawer boxes at 12 mm or 15 mm with 3 mm or 5 mm bottoms. Functional shields: spare tyre covers at 9–15 mm, sun visor substrates in thin panels or PET foam, and trunk side trim in 3–6 mm lightweight poplar plywood.
Core Comparison: Poplar Hybrid, Falcata, Marine Plywood and PET Foam
Core choice determines density, moisture behaviour and cost. Poplar hybrid lightweight plywood, BIGBAHN's volume grade, runs 400–430 kg/m³ across 2.7 to 30 mm. Marine plywood is the answer for genuinely wet zones, and it is worth being precise about why: it is specified for bond-line durability under prolonged water exposure, not for structural superiority. It is heavier and more expensive than poplar hybrid, so using it across the whole vehicle wastes both money and payload.
PET foam board is the third path and the one that breaks the weight floor entirely. At 80–300 kg/m³ depending on grade, with 100% closed-cell structure, zero water absorption and thermoplastic recyclability, it suits wet bath enclosures, insulated roofs, heavy-duty subfloors and any position where weight dominates and fastener loads are modest. The honest caveat: screw holding is lower than plywood, so it is a substrate for specific positions, not a blanket substitute.
Surface build-up is the last decision and it interacts with all three. Poplar hybrid accepts PP, PET, PVC and HPL facings; HPL high-pressure laminate is the durable choice for worktops, tables and high-wear verticals; decorative films suit vacuum-formed door skins and wrapped profiles. Choice of facing changes both finished weight and the bonding process — PUR flat laminating and vacuum pressing do not behave identically, so the facing and the PUR flat laminating decision should be made together, not sequentially.
The Compliance Checklist: Formaldehyde, Fire and Traceability
Formaldehyde is the entry ticket. ENF and E0 are the two grades that matter for vehicle interiors, and BIGBAHN panels carry both — with a measured value of 0.022 mg/m³ published on the corporate site.
